Week of Electro Part 6: deadmau5

I bet all the veteran ravers have been wondering when deadmau5 would be brought up haha. Pure and simple deadmau5 is whats hot right now, and his stuff is seriously off the hook. While its true that he's much more House oriented with a heavy dose of Trance, he has an immense presence in the Electro-House scene so I feel like he fits in well with the Week of Electro.

While performing, deadmau5 wears a comically over sized helmet resembling a dead mouse head (an obvious connection to his name). I think I mentioned him in the list of groups who followed Daft Punk in the whole "masked DJ" movement. The cloth used to make the mouth in the helmet is very thin, so deadmau5 can see what hes doing on the mixer.

In another post in the future I will probably go a little bit more in depth, but for now its all about the music so heres some fun selections:

Classic deadmau5
deadmau5 - Some Chords

More of a trance feel, he works really well with Kaskade
deadmau5 and Kaskade - Move For Me

Everybody knows the huge hit Ghosts n Stuff
deadmau5 - Moar Ghosts n Stuff

Really crazy but it works well, the fake accents can get a bit annoying though haha
Orlando Voorn - Paco Di Bango's World (deadmau5 Remix)

Week of Electro Part 5: MSTRKRFT

Lately the world has been filled with electro-hiphop collaboration including Kid Cudi, LMFAO, and David Guetta. In my mind, MSTRKRFT's style stands out though. They stick much closer to the classic synths and hardware characteristic of early electro and really use them well. Don't get me wrong though, there is a definite hip-hop dance club vibe to a lot of their stuff, and it makes for fun mixing. Lets take a look!

Leaning more towards Electro-House:

More of a hip-hop feel:

Remixes! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Metric is one of the best female fronted bands for sure, MSTRKRFT totally nails the synth on this remix

It might be a sin to insult Justice but damn this just might be better than the original

An insanely smooth hip-hop groove. Bonus points if you know the obvious sample starting around 1:30

Week of Electro Part 4: Boys Noize

Half way through the week! Today we take a look at Boys Noize, a really cool minimal-electro DJ. Hailing from Germany he can expect to be compared to the legendary group Kraftwerk, but he invites the comparison. With his combination of minimalistic style, use of vocoders/computer generated speech, and general German feel, I would go so far as to call Boys Noize the modern Kraftwerk. Boys Noize differs where he is influenced much more by House music than Kraut-rock, and his songs end up coming out a lot cleaner and better produced.

Have a look at some of his stuff here:

Week of Electro Part 3: Skrillex

I saved a very special entry for part 3 of the Week of Electro, Skrillex. Skrillex started out as a side project of 'Sonny' John Moore who used to be the front man for the punk/hardcore band named From First to Last. After trying out some other music, hes released a kick-ass EP and DJs regularly around the LA area.

So let me put this in some more interesting language: This dude comes from a background completely separate from the Electro genre, even techno, and f***ing NAILS IT. Seriously, once you listen you would think this guy had been DJing his whole life. The styling, the layering, the buildup and breakdown, everything is insanely tight. His sound is a fun mix of electro and heavy dubstep. Without further ado, lets take a look

The best way to describe Skrillex is to play this song. A grimy yet sophisticated buildup that adds progressively more and more levels, syllable melded vocals to set the mood, and then a drop that will seriously have you jumping out of your seat rocking out. Definitely a party song

This is a really good example of the fun you can have with syllable melding and vocal manipulation. The opening is pretty so-so but when you hear the drop fade in you can really feel the energy building and then explode

Most dub listeners probably wouldn't say this is true dubstep but it sure is heavy hitting and dirty in an awesome way

Skrillex can really hit the chill mood too. Cool and groovy

And how about some remixes?-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lady Gaga with a hard hitting complex beat? Hell yeah. I love what he does with the vocals

A true dubstep remix of a Skrillex original. A sound to behold

His recently released EP is a free download off his site! Click the image below to get more amazing music

Week of Electro Part 2: The Bloody Beetroots

Next on our list of awesome electro DJs is The Bloody Beetroots! An Italian duo with influence from the indie scene and even more so, the club scene. While performing they wear masks (like Daft Punk) but instead of robotic helmets they wear cloth Venom masks. Have a listen to some of their stuff!

Lets start with my absolute favorite by them, a Timberland remix

An equally awesome song, catchy beat

This song really shows the type of back beat common in BB songs
And how about some remixes?-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week of Electro Part 1: Phonat

Here we go, start of the Week of Electro!

For the first DJ of the week I chose Phonat, an incredibly talented electro DJ with a cool trend towards heavy filtering and electric guitar. He still isnt too well known outside of the electro scene but he is on beatport.com and iTunes if you wanna grab his stuff. The official videos hes released so far are crazy and psychedelic, well worth watching full screen. Take a look below!

Phonat - Love Hits the Fan

Phonat - Set Me Free

Hes got more than just those two though, check out some of this:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Very chill and relaxed sound here, includes some cool guitar

He experiments a lot here, taking different styles and combining them together to make this sick track

Really good example of that heavy filtering I was talking about, a very wet sound. Fun use of vocals too

Remixes? You betcha----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sweet pixelated art style based on the original music video
This was actually the first song that got me interested in Phonat, gets progressively better the longer you get into the song
