Louis La Roche

Well we've got another DJ with a confusing title, despite his name Louis La Roche is actually English. It's crazy considering his music is about as French as a baguette dipped in a cheese covered onion soup (if you don't know what I mean, think Daft Punk and Justice). He does take some pretty heavy hints from American funk though, and wow can this guy hit a groove. While he is working on an album now, so far he has only release EPs and remixes. To be honest I'm stunned at how far hes gotten without an album. Well check his stuff out and enjoy, glass of red wine optional haha

Lets get started with an appropriately named remix

You can really hear the funk influence in this one, what a groove

Favorite song by LLR by far. Amazing track

Played this at a party and it got insane, you just have to dance

Pendulum

Today's artist actually isn't a single DJ or even two DJs working together, Its a band. Pendulum has characterized their sound as a mix between Rock and DnB (two of my favorite genres). The result is amazing even if you aren't a particular fan of either genre though since Pendulum puts their own flavor into everything. They also enjoy experimenting, one of the examples I give has a full on reggae singer and he totally rocks it. Check it out!

This will put fists in your subwoofer. Seriously, this hits so hard it made a fat man dance.
Pendulum - Slam <- Thats the extended version

The band's singer is prominent in this one, hes got a cool style

Features a crazy reggae singer, he really brings the track together

This song is off the album they released just this May, simply stunning. This is the first part of a two part song entitled "Dusk"

Wolfgang Gartner

With a badass name like that you'd think he was German, but no Gartner hails from California. The best way to describe his brand of Electro-House would be a mix of Deadmau5 and Boys Noize. Thats probably why theres so much conflict between Deadmau5 fans and Gartner fans (I think they're both amazing). While a lot of his stuff can be hit and miss, both his originals and remixes can really rock the house.

For the first song heres one of his awesome originals. It really sums up his style well

OH MAN. I love a classical remix and this is off the hook. Phenomenal.

This track is an original, but clearly heavily influenced by Justice
Hook Shot - Wolfgang Gartner

Gartner shows that an Electro-House DJ can still blast the Trance, great track

This song needs a bit of an introduction. I despised the vocals and lyrics so much that I never listened to the song in its entirety. A friend and I were bored so we listened and to my surprise there is an INCREDIBLE beat starting around 1:50. My advice would be to listen to the whole thing even if you hate the vocals, it'l be worth it.

Two epic premixed Pandora stations

Bored at work? Want some well mixed stations?

Pandora is an amazing site. I once described it as “the site I wish I invented myself”. The only issue with the site is that you really need to be patient with the playlists. Once you take the time to really hone in on a sound that you want though, you can create amazing dynamic playlists.

Here are two of my best “stations” that I’ve made, just click these links below and Pandora will add them to your account

Pure Techno (My favorite)

Pretty Lights

Ever heard someone say “All DJs are just glorified playlist creators”? Tell them to think again. Pretty Lights is one of the most talented and dynamic DJs to ever hit the scene, creating his music from a mix of oldschool RnB and modern Hip Hop. You should check this out even if you aren’t a Hip Hop fan though, ‘cause this is allll electronic.

Typical mashup artists blatantly take large sections of songs and mix them together into one track with no flow. What separates Pretty Lights from this form of DJing is how active he is. When you listen to a song by PL you can recognize individual beats and harmonies, but the track as a whole has taken on an entirely new feel.

All four albums have been released for free online so feel free to go there and download them. Pretty Lights makes money by doing extensive touring, and if you ever have the chance to go to a show DO IT. I went to a show last April and had a blast. The shows are great especially because the DJ is accompanied by a live drummer who really adds to the feel.

Here are some of my favorites

Finally Moving (Remix)

Hot Like Sauce

Sunday School

Drum and Bass (DnB)

DnB is my new favorite genre right now. Some people describe DnB as a faster version of Dubstep, but you could pretty much describe DnB as a faster version of anything. The reason? It’s fast. It’s damn fast. 160 to 190 bpm to be exact. Don’t mistake it for Hardstyle though, which is just as fast but has a much more synthetic sound.

The challenge with making a good DnB track is managing both the melody and the rhythm. Because the tempo is so fast, it’s very easy for the beats to meld together into an unappealing mess. Good DnB has the fast tempo but uses non-percussive instruments and/or vocals to keep the song interesting and give it flow.

Ever have a ton of work to do and need it done really quickly? Chug your energy drink of choice (Amp is mine) and put on a good DnB mix. You will be astonished at how productive you become.

Need some suggestions for your mix? Check these out:

B-complex - Beautiful Lies

MRSA - Chemicals

Royalston & Mark Berry - Tough Luck

Cyantific - Hong Kong Express

Netsky - Smile

Trance

Ahhh trance… It’s got the unce unce unce, it’s got the flowing synth, and it’s got the clear vocal chorus with hilariously cheesy lyrics. Good trance is pretty much the equivalent of a techno anthem: catchy danceable beats with lyrics you can sing along to.

Whenever you hear techno in a movie club scene they’re almost always playing European trance. The Germans, Swedes and Dutch have the best stuff and that’s where most of the popular trance DJs come from. A lot of techno fanatics shy away from trance simply because it’s so poppy and catchy, but I love every bit of it.

Below are some fun examples for trance

Ferry Corsten and Benny Benassi's remix of Never Win

Just Be by Tiesto

Armin Van Buuren- Imagine

Bronleewe & Bose's remix of Cut (originally by Plum)

Tiesto's remix of Resistance (originally by Muse)

Daft Punk

Whats a techno blog without some Daft Punk? Well since so many people (including myself) got started in techno with Daft Punk I figured I might as well start my blog with some of their music. That, and they are simply the most interesting, famous, and fun to listen to techno group out there.

As I'm sure you know, Daft Punk is made up of two French DJs with origins in indie rock. Their image became so recognizable because of the robot helmets they wear. This “masked DJ” trend now includes such artists as The Bloody Beetroots, Deadmau5, and The Toxic Avenger.

Below are a couple of my favorite songs.

Da Funk

Short Circuit

Television Rules the Nation

Interstella 5555 is a full length animated movie with the whole Discovery album for a soundtrack and it is amazing. I would highly recommend it click here to check it out

Welcome to Quoth the Raver!

So why was this blog created? I have been heavily involved in music my whole life but it’s been only two years since I started listening to techno. Once I realized how amazing electronic music was, I began to search endlessly for more. My collection expands every day and now it’s gotten to the point where I feel like I have something to offer.

Instead of spamming my Facebook page with links to my new finds (sorry guys haha) I thought this might be a more targeted way to share my love for techno.

I plan on updating periodically with both my old favorites and all of the new music I find, so sit back and enjoy! I hope this helps anyone just getting involved in EDM (electronic dance music) or is interesting to those of you who already have collections of your own
